Midnight Sun
The light changes here in Lofoten but it never goes away. You get up at 3AM to go to the bathroom and the living room looks like it did when you were making dinner at 8PM.
It’s cool. We decided to go investigate - Abraham, Silas, Sheri, Jess, WM and I piling into two cars at 11pm and driving to a beach which faces northwest.
11:45PM: What time is it?
When we arrived just before midnight the light was a bit lower and the sky was beginning to turn a pale shade of pink. But it still felt like daytime. We scampered, hopped and explored.
12:00AM: Midnight sun:
We barbecued with these cool portable charcoal grills they sell in the super markets here. Hot dogs, tofu dogs, scallions, and peaches with cinnamon.
And the sun? not yet set! but thinking about it.
12:45AM: Not sunset but ‘sun traverse’
The sun’s lower’ eighth touched the sea and then it slowly moved north. Of course actually, it was the earth spinning around the ever shining sun while our star appeared to move laterally along the horizon line of the Arctic Sea.
1:15AM: Dawn
We continued to chill and play on the beach as the sun chose not to set but instead said ‘let’s do it again!’ and bounced back upward into the dawnblue sky.
2:15AM: Morning
When we got back into the cars to head home the sun was very definitely rising. The kids and I blasted 90s hip-hop and ACDC and we all headed home to bed.
Goodbye Norway
It’s been such a blast to be here at the top of the world in the summer time. It feels like we’ve gotten closer to the sun and got to know her a little bit better.
