Why we wear white

Hello everyone.

Today I will be talking about what we pilgrims wear on our treacherous journey to the temples of Kukai.

Traditionally, all of the pilgrims back in the day when Kukai himself was still alive and about 200 years after that, wore white.

This was because in Japan white is the color of death. This pilgrimage was much, much more dangerous when people still wore straw Sandals when climbing a huge, frozen peak. So the pilgrims wore the white attire for a Japanese funeral. They did this because so many people would drop dead from hunger, thirst, getting attacked by wild animals and backing up off of the edges of cliffs while trying to take a selfie (no, they did not do that last thing. They were smarter than all of idiots now who seem to think that they suddenly gain the power of flight when they look good in a selfie.)

Anyway, the tradition of wearing white if you are a pilgrim stayed around so we all have cool, white garments that have Japanese writing on the backs. It is actually very fun to be matching, even though technically we are dressing up in case we all die.

Lovely having that uplifting chat wasn’t it?

Love you guys,

Willa Marie
